Dental X-Rays

An Inside Look Into Your Oral Health.

What Are Dental X-Rays?

Dental x-rays are an important diagnostic tool used to assess the health of your teeth, mouth, gums, and jaws. Also known as radiographs, the x-rays allow the dentist to see detailed images of your teeth, including the roots and surrounding structures. This information is essential for planning dental treatment and for detecting dental problems in their early stages.

At your local Winter Park dental clinic, we use cutting-edge x-ray equipment to assist our staff in discovering deterioration and disease that is not apparent during a typical dental checkup. We recommend all new patients receive a full set of x-rays to establish a baseline for future comparison. We want to ensure that your smile is healthy and beautiful, now and in the years to come.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Dental x-rays are safe and painless, and they only expose you to a minimal level of radiation. According to scientific research, a patient usually receives 0.005 mSv radiation from the dental x-ray procedure. This amount equates to 1.6% of your daily sunlight radiation exposure. At Smile Center Orlando, we pride ourselves on always putting our patients’ safety first, which is why we are following the American Dental Association (ADA) X-ray protocol and making sure all our patients are wearing a leaded apron and leaded collar to protect their thyroid and abdominal regions during the process.

What Types of Issues Do Dental X-Rays Help Detect?

Dental x-rays can detect a variety of dental problems in their earliest stages before they become visible to the naked eye. This includes:

  • Tooth decay in small hidden areas between the teeth
  • Decay beneath existing dental fillings
  • Bone loss due in the jaw to periodontal disease
  • Changes in the bone or root canal structure due to injury or infection
  • Abscesses, cysts, and tumors around the roots of the teeth

X-rays are also used to determine the teeth’s position and condition, allowing the dentist to better plan for tooth extraction and root canal treatment, as well as implants, dentures, and other dental treatments.
