What is a Denture?

A denture is a custom-made replacement for missing teeth, and provides support for the cheeks and lips. The prosthetic teeth are made of an acrylic resin base that looks like natural gums and supports a set of artificial teeth. Dentures are removable so that they can be taken out and cleaned regularly. There are two types of dentures: full and partial.

  • Full Dentures replace all of the natural teeth that have been removed.
  • Immediate Full Dentures are placed in the mouth immediately after the natural teeth removal. They are held in place by the remaining gum tissue and bones, and must remain until the gums have healed completely.
  • Conventional Full Dentures are placed in the mouth once the gum tissue has healed and the muscles have shrunk, which can take between eight to twelve weeks. They are made from impressions of the gums taken after the natural teeth have been removed.
  • Partial Dentures are used when some of the natural teeth are still present. They are held in place by a metal frame connected to the remaining teeth, preventing the other teeth from shifting position.

Why Are Dentures Necessary?

Dentures assist people in chewing properly and talking clearly after their natural teeth have been removed or need to be removed due to disease or injury. They also support the lips and cheeks and prevent sagging in those regions. A person’s facial muscles can droop when they don’t have dentures, making them appear far older than they actually are. Dentures can help to fill out the appearance of a person’s face, giving them a more youthful look.  If you still have most of your teeth and only missing a few, dental implants might be a better option.  Your dentist will give you a full dental exam with X-rays to determine the right treatment plan.
